Day 2: No chickens on this bus...

Here we go! We have loaded up the via and from here we will drive 8-10 hours into the mountains of Alta Verapaz.

This fancy bus, definitely not a chicken bus, will carry us as far as El Estor where we will switch to smaller buses that can handle the rough roads and windy mountain passes.

As we arrive in our village, Secanquin, we will have a short welcoming and then scramble to set up camp and tents.

Be back out on Thursday with lots of stories and pictures!

Day 1: Guatemala Expedition with CHOICE Humanitarian and Academy Mortgage

Arriving at sunrise in Guatemala City is worth the lack of sleep. The city was just beginning to wake and my heart felt happy to be home.

The group arrives today, 50 people gathering from all over the US to embark on this adventure. Each person has earned this trip, either through their role with Academy Mortgage or because of their unique skills. I am impressed that they chose to go live in the jungle for a week with no running water, no iPhones, no electricity, rather than a fancy 5 star resort. These are my kind of people.

As we wait for the group, I had a great run down the Avenida Reforma. Passed 8 monuments, 3 Super 24s (like a 7-Eleven), 1 intense soccer match and countless Guatemalans going about their day. I love exploring a city on foot.

As I write this, I am poolside enjoying delicious ceviche! Life is good.

Tonight we will have dinner and our first part of in country orientation. It is also the moment when the group will meet the real rock stars of CHOICE... our in country directors, Jorge and Marta Chen. They are the true magic of CHOICE'S success.

The adventure begins...
